A comcastic moment – College Park Dreaming continued

North Potomac / College Park Dreaming
January 25, 2012

It’s Duke tonight.

It’s UMD honoring Gary Williams with naming the floor at Comcast.

It’s a Slice of Life moments all around. Tonight, I will be in the nose-bleed section within spiting distance to the 2002 Championship banner. I will use my iPhone for a few pics. I won’t be on the court till later this month.

Opinions vary among my friends, alumni, followers and non-believers about the early Gary Williams versus the later-day post national championship Williams. Was he great for UMD or did he not achieve in bringing MD to permanent elite status? After tonight his name will be there on the floor for all to see, regardless.

Look at the eyes on the electronic display - Gary watching over Gary

I know this much – I saw the Left-hander coach – and the promise to make MD the UCLA of the East, then watched (Philip & JD saw) Williams deliver a championship trophy. They both could coach. Tonight many high caliber coaches – former, recent past and the slice of life present will be at Comcast to witness Gary’s comcast moment (small c).

To be a Terp fan means middle class excellence – a workman’s team – plenty of disappointments and those glory moments that reach an ecstatic state of well-being. No pedigree’s needed.

Gary Williams accomplishments is lined up at the podium awaiting his retirement announcement.

Williams was that workman coach. Turgeon follows in the same mold. It will be a timely introduction for Turgeon to see what can be – what it truly means to be a basketball coach at Maryland. Not, a big shoes to fill thing – rather it’s reaching for that adulation and the promise of what could be.

Maryland chances at beating Duke tonight are slim – the PG County cops and MD State Police should rest up – there will be other “Fear the Turtle” days for them to be on their toes.

Coach Bobby Knight and his disciple Coach Mike K will be on-hand – and many others – to see a rare night of the Maryland faithful. Knight has not been seen in College Park since the 1969-70 season – with his Army team playing Driesell at the historic Cole Field House. So tonight is a dreamy night for all.

Side Note: Earlier I referred to Philip and JD – my son and his best friend. JD, after JMU, went onto Duke for his MBA and worked with the Athletic Department and with Coach K. Philip, a MD grad and JD were at the Georgia Dome when MD beat Indiana for the championship. Coincidentally, JDs sister Jenny was engaged earlier this month to another rabid Dukie at Cameron’s center court after a Duke game. Tonight I drive with JD’s dad (and Denise) over to Comcast to see Duke and MD play. The blood lines run deep here in ACC country.

So, it’s Duke tonight. Bring ‘em on. Bring ‘em on. Dreaming of a win!

Photos are from Gary’s retirement announcement at Comcast – at noon May 6, 2011.

Billy Hahn, Tim Brant, Gary with his wife, and hidden is Johnny Holiday - all will be reunited this evening

The Leify Green Conspiracy

The Leify Green Conspiracy
Friday, January 13, 2012

Friday was a long day of shooting. It started with a 2AM wake up call and ended at 11:30PM when I finally climbed in bed. My itinerary
• 3:30 AM – B&O Budd Car, Circa 1951, relocated – Gaithersburg MD Museum
• 5:15 PM – #5 Metro Area Girls Basketball Team – Darnestown, MD
• 8:30 PM – The Main Cup – Photo Session – Middletown, MD

The Leify Green Conspiracy was in the house at The Main Cup – it turned into the best slice of life moment for the day.

I’m going back to the Land of Ago, to my earlier clubbing/concert going-days to recall a similar signature artist performance. It was
• 1973 – The Cellar Door, Georgetown DC
I was in a group of 10 college friends (incl. Denise) who went to the Cellar Door on a winter’s eve to see headliner John Prine. Warner Brothers was filming “The Exorcist” 2 blocks away (remember the stairs?) and the crew ended filming to catch Prine’s show. Opening for Prine was a petite 24-year old redheaded bottleneck steel guitar player and a tall bass player. The guitar player was Bonnie Raitt, with Freebo on the Bass. She stole the show and my listening heart that night as Denise and I sat in a front row table. We have seen her numerous times since then.

Fast Forward to January 2012 – The Main Cup in Middletown, MD

On assignment for the Montgomery Magazine I was shooting the “Now Performing” photo for a future story on the group The Leify Green Conspiracy.

Luke, Leify, Big Lar "Deep Tracks" and John

I was to shoot the 4-member band before they performed and did so in the service hallway amongst stacked chairs, auxiliary tables, baby seats, service trays filled with forks and knives, in the pathway to the restrooms. And then there was Big Lar “Deep Tracks” Strine.

Fifteen minutes after the shoot while sharing a Chicken Quesadilla with Denise at “Jerry’s” bar “Cups” brightly lit backroom suddenly filled with followers and busy waitresses.

Band members quickly downed a shot of Jim Beam Bourbon and kicked off the evening with Leif on vocal lead. After the first song Denise turned to me and smiling said – “they’re good”. By 10PM thinking I had seen my next signature performance, I left for the hour ride home. Saturday, I popped in their CD Leif gave me and listened repeatedly as I drove around. I was convinced.

Forgive me but I always do this, I try to pigeonhole new music. I am a veteran XM satellite radio listener and I “get” most new play (ranging from The Loft to BPM). Leify Green Conspiracy hit a cord with me, perhaps the CD with mandolin play (missing from Friday’s performance) was the clicking point. I think it was their original music and the cover of Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love”.

So where do I put them – they exist somewhere in between a bluesy John Popper (w/o harmonicas) Blues Traveler and the lightheartedness song composition of BNL (Canada’s Barenaked Ladies) with former Stephan Page as lead singer. They call it “organic rock”. So be it.

Leify waiting before the show

Ah but whom am I – just a humble photographer – certainly not a music critic.

So, just to add a slight bit of credentials to my live performance listening ear – listed are my other signature concert moments – in no particular order.
• Cher – Private Concert – ORACLE Center, San Jose, CA – 2002
• Jackson Brown w/David Lindley – Berryville VA – 1974
• David Gray – Ryman Auditorium, Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, TN – 2010
• Nils Lofgren – piano solos – Merriweather Post – Columbia, MD – 1975?
• Bruce Hornsby – piano solos – Strathmore, North Bethesda, MD – 2005
• James Brown – Ritchie Coliseum, College Park, MD – 1969
• Nancy Wilson & War, Capital Jazz Fest, Annapolis, MD – 2006?

The Leify Green Conspiracy consists of:
Luke Solomon – Bass
Yerodin Sanders – Percussion and Vocals
John Lawton – Guitar
Leif/Leify Green – Guitar and Vocals

Missing – Zan McLeod – Mandolin

Heroes – In the line of duty – Slice of Life heroic moments

January 9, 2012

Ok, I am not featuring Tim Tebow and his Bronco’s here beating the Steelers in OT. However, it was a great 3 days for learning of other heroic moments and the people who then appear in front of may camera.

Heroes are everywhere amongst us (sort of like Angels) – they are not always recognized or seen but their actions speak loudly. For instance over the past three days I and my camera came across people doing simple heroic actions – just being themselves – as a part of a normal day-in-their slice of life moment

Think Bocce Ball/Special Olympics, Rescue Pets and a Congressional Badge of Bravery Award – wow how can I connect those. Look below.

Bocce Ball – Unified Sports in Montgomery County, MD – Saturday January 7th

Four Montgomery County High School teams became the first among all county teams to kick off the inaugural Winter Bocce Ball season for Maryland Special Olympics Unified Sports. Seneca Valley, Clarksburg, Gaithersburg and Quince Orchard met at the latter’s home court outfitted for Bocce Ball courtesy of Special Olympics. Though all their coaches promised me that I would have a roster of the players, at the time of this writing I do not have their names – so enjoy these few slice of life moements of the Quad Matches. See more photos at SugarloafPhoto – Unified Sports.

Animal Welfare Advocate – Hal Horenberg – Sunday, January 8th

Hal HOrenberg - Animal Welfare Advocate

It was only a momentary slice of life meeting but it was one of those moments when you run into someone who truly is doing the volunteer heroic in a quiet one-off manner. In Hal’s case he has been an advocate for rescue pets since 2008 to the detriment of building his software business. Hal success lies in the fact that he has placed 90 rescue dogs into homes. He shows off his successes by wearing a lab coat covered in buttons of pet pictures and when you closely you can see that he has also created a shirt with heart-shaped photos of all the dogs in the form of a heart over his heart. Is he driven – I would say so and if you are interested check out these associated websites at Pet Connect Rescue, CASA, PAWS, Reach Out Rescue and Resources, and Mutts Matter Rescue.

Congressional Bravery Award Recipient – Montgomery County Officer Edward E. Paden, Jr – Monday, January 9th.

Today in Rockville, Officer Paden received this country’s highest award, created by Congress in 2008, to honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have distinguished themselves for exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty. Officer Paden, who on September 1, 2010 had just completed a triathlon-training swim in the Chesapeake Bay returned to his Silver Spring MD station and immediately, responded to report of a terrorist-hostage event unfolding at the Discovery Channel Headquarters. He was the first responder on the scene (his normal beat is in Silver Spring) and there he reported on the bomb-carrying terrorist (James Lee) thus preventing him from entering any further than the first floor of Discovery’s Georgia Avenue location. Eventually, support arrived from MCPD, MCFR and numerous state, federal and local enforcement agencies. His actions that day was said to have saved countless lives (over 1000). Today, US Senator Ben Cardin, US Representative Chris Van Hollen, MCPS Commander Thomas Manger and County Executive Ike Leggett were on hand to present Ofc. Paden with the Congressional Badge of Bravery Award.
